Gesture Art and Dance
Please note this event has moved from the Gallery of Art and Design to the GHB 123 (Painting Studio)

Gesture Art and Dance is a cross-disciplinary, collaboration session featuring the movement study “Tanagra Figures” by Isadora Duncan as presented by SPVA Director/Dancer Meg Booker, and “gesture” drawing responses by Professor/Visual Artist Janet Gorzegno. Also participating will be students of Figure Drawing from Art and Design.

For her “Tanagra Figures”, the famed dancer Isadora Duncan (1877-1927) was inspired by the Tanagra figurines of Hellenistic Greece, which were terra-cotta sculptures representing moments from everyday life. Duncan’s remarkable dance forms have in turn inspired various visual artists in the creation of figurative drawings, color works and sculpture.

Open to all adults, attendees for this event are invited to participate in both the drawing activities and the dance movements. Interested observers are also welcome. We will begin with a brief presentation providing an overview of session concepts and activities, with inquiry and discussion continuing throughout the morning as we discover exciting points of intersection between the time art of dance and the two dimensional art of drawing. Drawing materials will be provided at a limited number of easels. Comfortable clothing is recommended.

Booker and Gorzegno, both alumni of Yale University, are recognized artists in their respective fields. Dancer Meg Booker is well known for her knowledge and creative application of the innovative dance style of Isadora Duncan. She was recently called upon to dance for an Italian TV series in an episode featuring the style of Duncan. Visual Artist Janet Gorzegno is an exhibiting painter who loves gesture drawing from the figure. Fascinated by the expressive power of gesture in 2D art, she enjoys exploring drawing and painting compositions for how they foster visual perception of directional forces, weight and movement.

Come join us for a fun morning of dancing and mark-making!

Hot coffee and tea will be provided.

Gaza Monologues
Original Play Created by: Ashtar Theatre
English Translation by: Fida Jiryis
Motion Graphics Designer: Jacob Cotton
Choreograpaher & Perfomer: Candice Salyers
Costume Designer: Kelly James Penot

The Gaza Mono-Logues were written by teenagers in Gaza under the supervision of artist Ali Abu Yasine and therapist Nadel Sha’ath in association with Ashtar Theatre. Through the creation of this work, Ashtar Theatre provided a safe space for these young people to express their experiences as well as a way to communicate about their lives to others. Although they are not permitted to travel, their words have reached over 80 cities around the world and have been translated into 18 languages. Choreographer and performer Candice Salyers was encouraged by Ashtar’s Artistic Director Iman Aoun to create a dance version of the play, which was the beginning of this on-going collaboration between visual art, dance, and theatre. This meditative dance unfolds slowly amidst a projected landscape of transformation that seeks to remember the importance of these teenager’s lives and to ground the performance in our shared humanity. (The full play contains 31 monologues, and this excerpt will feature monologues 8-12.)

Women's Work
Women's Work is a collaboration between Jen Torres, Professor of Sculpture, and School Director/Dance Professor Meg Brooker. This work translates the physical labor of their artistic practices, sculpture and dance, into an interactive, interdisciplinary performance piece. The artists aim to highlight the physical demands of their practices through the theme of "women's work," historically stereotyped as undervalued domestic labor. The artists explore the sculptural forms of their own moving bodies through space, as well as how their movement can shape metallic elements to create living, mobile sculpture. Professors Torres and Brooker are both award-winning artists in their respective fields with works produced by or commissioned for a range of institutions including the Mississippi Museum of Art and the Hunter Museum of American Art, among others.
